Vs.

Speaking of “F words,” let’s discuss flashbacks. Flashback to this year’s Martin Luther King Day. A day to honor the civil rights movement (or the part of it that applied to African-Americans); a holiday to honor the individual who led so much of America’s struggle for equality; a day to pay tribute to a man who died for a noble cause.
I think this is a day to be celebrated, because every aspect of our nation's dialogue on civil rights is of utmost importance, whether it is African-American or LGBT rights, or whatever. Each minority in our country must be acknowledged and assisted, but something has been rubbing me the wrong way lately- and I know it has to do with this collective (conscious? subconscious?) prioritization of racism over sexism in our country. Yeah, I suppose I am referring to what feminist activist Jessica Valenti calls the "Oppression Olympics." Or, more specifically, the group I believe is losing that game.
I could handle it when Don Imus’s sexist comments were misinterpreted and portrayed as being mainly racist remarks. I can almost hold my tongue when I hear the phrase “women and minorities” used over and over, (as if women are not minorities!?? Last I checked they were the largest minority group on this planet). But now, I cannot keep quiet. The final straw for me is watching the sexism vs. racism issue being promoted in the media in regards to Clinton & Obama’s campaigns. Clinton gets slammed for “using the gender card” but Obama is allowed to discuss race and everyone else (aka obviously the mainly white news anchors) tip toes around the subject, as if criticizing his positions on- or usage of -“black issues” will mean they themselves are being racist. Moreover, Hillary’s comments on Dr. King have been completely twisted to form a caricature of her as being racist, when she is anything but! Of course, mainstream media does not even complain in the slightest when a McCain supporter asks him, "How do we beat the bitch?," and McCain actually laughs in response to the Hill-hater's question.
This frustration is overwhelming…
I will continue my ranting & raving another time. 2:30 a.m. leaves me too tired (and therefore inarticulate), although simultaneously still passionate as hell about this issue... I'll write more when I can...
Love & peace & goodnight.
